Dell is a 70-75 lb, 2 - 2.5 year old. He had demodectic mange and was dumped when a young dog. We treated him, got him his shots, etc. We had no intention of keeping him, but it took a long time to treat the mange, and by then we'd grown to love him. He loves people and will settle in whatever room we're in. Dell's a great dog, and we hope to find him a home with people who will spend lots of time with him and who aren't gone for long periods of time. He has a joint problem in his shoulder (OCD); it doesn't seem to bother him as much as when we first found him. We have an x-ray of the joint. He's otherwise healthy, neutered, chipped and on ... (Read More)heartworm preventative. He has retriever hair with a fully blue tongue and chow chow temperament. We already have a full-size dog; they get along, but they have dominance problems at the fence and door or when on leashes. He does well on a leash by himself. He's okay if we leave him at home for a short while, but if we're gone a long time, he has sometimes chewed -- not recently, though, so that might have just been an age thing. He can sit and will wait for his food; we haven't been able to train him to recall. He is territorial at fence lines and the door. He likes being outdoors, but would need either a sturdy fence without neighboring dogs or better training than we've been able to give him. He is a great companion and a sweet dog; we are just not the right family for him. He would love to have a home where his people are around a lot and have land for roaming. We recently took in two dogs as fosters for a family that lost there home. They didn't want to lose their dogs so we awere keeping them till they can get back on there feet. Ginger is one o f the 2. Very sweet chow mix rescue. Was hanging out in our neighborhood for several days and we took him in. Got him full vet services, shots and neutered. He has been living with 2 other dogs and is great inside or out and walks well on a leash. Loves to be loved (clearly did not have aloto of attention prior to being found). Very appreciative. Pepe was found chained up together with another dog in front of an East Dallas house with no shade, water, or food. I could see from my vehicle that they were incredibly emaciated as both of their bones structures were visible from over 30 ft away. They both were very friendly to my approach, although obviously very skeptical, and frightened. Both dogs were obviously very weak, dehydrated, literally starving to death, and sick as they were both crawling with fleas, draining them of what little their ravaged bodies had left. A Vet has since determined that they are both about 5 years old and had virtually no muscle mass whatsoever. The ... (Read More)Vet prescribed a rigorous and hearty diet to aid them in putting on weight which we have been following for almost 3 weeks now. They are both now gaining weight at an approx 4 lbs per week with each needing about another 10 lbs. They have both been 'fixed', have passed clear for all internal parasites and are currently doing well with both heart worm and flea preventative medications. Pepe is very shy and timid. It takes him time to work up the courage to approach a stranger, but if you are patient enough to allow him to muster up the courage, it is well worth the wait! He is very affectionate, loves to be loved on, and great with other dogs, people, and children! He is submissive, but does NOT exhibit overly submissive problems (ex:submissive urination). SHE CANNOT BE FED AROUND OTHER DOGS. It is important that there not be food around her of any kind when in the presence of other dogs or she will become extremely aggressive and will attack other dogs that come near. My suggestion is that she go to a Single woman with NO OTHER DOGS. With that said, she has truly earned a special place in my heart. When alone she has a very mild manor. She is docile, sweet, affectionate, gentle when hand fed, and extremely grateful for her rescue. She has just been through so much. I cannot afford to keep her though and having three other dogs already, it is not safe for her, them, me, or my son, to keep her much longer as I cannot keep breaking up vicious dog fights. Chow Chow Dogs can make good pets in Texas if they match your IifestyIe. The Chow Chow is a big furry breed whose name literally means Puffy Lion Dog. Chow Chows are loyal companion animals but can sometimes be stubborn, obstinate, and overprotective against strangers. Chow chows need to be handled by a firm master. Chow chows can be aggressive with other pets but most are good with kids. Chow chows can live in an apartment and are equally good as inside or outside dogs. Daily walks help stave off behavior problems, although Chow Chows can be resistant to exercise.
