Rescue Me ID: 14-07-24-00345Borba (female)

Chow Chow    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Borba (female, on the right) and Mochi (male, on the left) are 8-year old purebred chow chow siblings. I posted their picture together because it would be ideal if they can be adopted together. These are sweet, gentle giants. Needs grooming as they are kept in backyard 100% of the time due to owner's severe allergies. Hoping to find a forever home with a loving family who can keep them indoors during the hot summer months. We are taking them to the shelter in two weeks. Please let me know a.s.a.p. if you are interested. Thank you!

Chowder is a 6 year old Chow Chow mix. He was a therapy dog for his elderly, wheelchair-bound owner who recently passed away. Unfortunately, she had no family when she passed and that is how chowder ended up in the shelter. He is a very sweet, very friendly dog who needs a new owner to love.

Yogi is one great dog, he sweet and affectionate and very good natured. His owner found him walking around on the freeway, but despite his terrible experience, he's the nicest dog! Sadly, his owner recently passed away from cancer, so now we are looking for GOOD homes for his dogs. He gets along great with other dogs and is excellent with kids. One look into Yogi's beautiful brown eyes and you will fall in love!

This is Griffin. Griffin is an extremely sweet small (45lbs) Chow mix. The reason we are looking at re-homing Griffin is due to the relationship between him and our other dog. For the past 4 years, Griffin and his brother Eddy have been best buds. We recently had our first child and ever since then, the dynamic between the two dogs changed. They still get along 99.9% of the time but when they get into it, the fighting is too much for us to handle. He is also very timid around our daughter and that makes us nervous. On his own, he is a very loving dog. All he wants is to be by your side. He doesn't like cats or other animals (besides ... (Read More)Eddy). I want to give full disclosure about our Griffy. When we adopted him, we very quickly found out that he had a renal disease (kidneys). The vet said it was due to the chow rescue we got him from going the cheap way out when he was neutered. Apparently, his body didn't like being under when he was being fixed and since he wasn't monitored, it damaged his kidneys. Ever since then, his health has stabilized and as of the past 1-2 years, his numbers have improved. This is going to be an issue with him eventually but as of now, he is very healthy. We are so very sad to be re-homing him but we know its best for him. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. He really is an amazing dog and if given the chance, he can make a new family very happy. We are requesting a re-homing fee of $150. We will be donating that money to our local shelter. We just want to make sure you are serious about adopting our dog. (Less)

Animal ID: 14-06-18-00052Mochi (female)

Chow Chow Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very Low Energy
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

I rescued Mochi about two months ago. She was roaming my neighborhood in Southeast LA for around three months dragging her chain. I tried removing her chain when I first saw her, but I was only able to tear a piece of the rope that was tied to her chain. Three months later, I saw her again around my block dragging a LONGER rope tied to her chain. This time I was able to get her entire chain off and put my own leash around her. She showed little resistance and very subtle defensive behavior. I took her in and with the help of a friend that works at a vet clinic, I buzzed her hair, gave her a bath, and paid for her shots. She had ... (Read More)severely matted hair, but was overall in good health. She handled all the poking and prodding really well and seemed really calm. I took her in hoping to find a home for her, but I was not able to find anyone who was interested. A month passed and it seemed like she was going to become part of the family, which includes three other dogs. Everyday that passed she seemed to act more and more a like a dog and less like a scared animal. However, on June 14, 2014, Mochi bit our chihuahua twice. I did not see the attack, but my mother described it as all of a sudden. Mochi and our chihuahua were sharing a bed. The chihuahua was barking because she heard a noise and Mochi bit into her and pinned her down. My mom, sister and other dogs all intervened but not before she could take another bite at our chihuahua. All in all, our chihuahua survived with four deep puncture wounds and several stitches. The event took us all by surprise. Mochi had been coexisting with our dogs for about a month with no signs of aggressive behavior. We are not sure what sparked her to attack our chihuahua seeing as though barking is a common behavior with our chihuahua. Now my mom wants her gone ASAP. We currently have in our backyard separated from the other dogs, but it pains us to isolate her. Even though she did what she did, we feel for her. I can't stand the thought of leaving her at a shelter. We might be the only humans who have ever cared for her, and it made us happy tho give her a home. However, after the incident, we just do not feel comfortable leaving her alone with our other dogs. So, I am looking to this and other websites to find her a loving home were Mochi can live a peaceful life. Please help me find her a home. Thank you. (Less)

A note from Honey's foster family: Honey is a healthy, 13-year old Chow mix. She has been living at Casa McKibben since February 18th, 2014. Honey needs a new 'furever' home where she can live out her retirement years. Honey is a rescue that was adopted by her family about 11 years ago. Due to a work assignment situation, her family will be living in Dubai for the foreseeable future. Although her family loves and misses her so much, it's virtually impossible for them to take Honey to Dubai with them. They are hoping to re-home her permanently with a loving family. Honey is VERY quiet and well-behaved. She NEVER barks ... even when ... (Read More)there's someone at the door and the other dogs are going crazy. She minds her own business and spends most of the day just hanging out in the house. She can do stairs on a leash, but she definitely prefers to stay on the ground floor '| even at night. Since we have all sorts of dogs coming and going all the time at Casa McKibben, we are very careful to supervise her introductions. When meeting new dogs, Honey goes nose-to-nose and wags her tail. She really appreciates other dogs that respect her space and don't bump into her or try to play with her. Even around high-energy dogs, Honey gets along very well so long as they don't knock into her. The other dogs seem to figure out pretty quickly that Honey just likes to be left alone. Honey enjoys taking long walks around our pool and will sometimes walk for 30-60 minutes at a time ... stopping often to enjoy the smells in the backyard. She really enjoys leash walks around the neighborhood, although you have to take it kind of slow and give her lots of breaks to rest. Like any senior dog, Honey really loves long naps. We have an orthopedic pad right in front of the TV in our den. She even watches TV with us sometimes when there's something on that interests her. Honey enjoys her food VERY much and is always interested in what's going on in the kitchen. She's a really good house guest and doesn't chew on anything. She knows how to use our doggy door with no problems at all. She is very good about going outside through the doggy door whenever she needs to relieve herself. We don't know how Honey would get along with cats since there are none at Casa McKibben. She's a slow mover and not into chasing anything, so it's probable that she would just leave any resident cats alone. Honey is safe and sound for now at Casa McKibben, so this is not an emergency situation. If you can help us find Honey a good home, please contact Mark McKibben at (626) 888-1544 or my email: mark@mckibben.com THANKS!!! (Less)

My name is Alex, and I am a 9-year-old boy and I weigh 65lbs. I am a Samoyed/Chow mix and yes I have been DNA tested. If you would ask me, Id say I am a lucky dog. I was found wandering the streets, and it was not easy to get me to safety. I was so scared. For the first several days, I would not let anyone get close enough to touch me, but then I bonded with my foster mommy in a big way and showed her how sweet and playful I really am. Do not be worried if I do not get attached to you right away, it takes me a little while to bond, but when I do, its forever! I have separation issues and would be best placed in a home with another dog and ... PIease Read Before Adopting a Chow Chow in California
Chow Chow Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Chow Chow is a big furry breed whose name literally means Puffy Lion Dog. Chow Chows are loyal companion animals but can sometimes be stubborn, obstinate, and overprotective against strangers. Chow chows need to be handled by a firm master. Chow chows can be aggressive with other pets but most are good with kids. Chow chows can live in an apartment and are equally good as inside or outside dogs. Daily walks help stave off behavior problems, although Chow Chows can be resistant to exercise.
